We are delighted that you are part of the Communion Forest - a new global initiative which is all about living out the Anglican Fifth Mark of Mission: strive to safeguard the integrity of creation and sustain and renew the life of the earth.

Launch of the Communion Forest

On Wednesday 3rd August, in the garden of Lambeth Palace, the Communion Forest was launched. Hundreds of bishops of the Anglican Communion, gathered for the Lambeth Conference, their spouses and invited guests joined in prayer and commitment to the initiative. The short service was led by Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby and Archbishop of Central America Julio Murray, who is the Anglican Communion’s lead bishop on the environment and chair of the Anglican Communion Environmental Network. They were accompanied by their spouses, by Kenyan climate activist Elizabeth Wathuti, by Indigenous Anglican leaders, by eco-bishops from across the Anglican Communion, and by others involved in developing the initiative.

Taking root

We are delighted that the Communion Forest has got off to a great start! We are beginning to hear about how bishops are taking the initiative back to their dioceses and taking action. For example, immediately after the Lambeth Conference, the bishops of Iowa (USA), Swaziland (Eswatini) and Brechin (Scotland) planted a tree for the Communion Forest in celebration of their three-way companionship link.

Meanwhile, on the opposite side of the world in Brisbane, Australia, Bishop Jeremy Greaves ( featured image) presented trees to those he received into Anglican Church at the Lakes Anglican Church as his contribution to the Communion Forest.

A case study to inspire

Across the Anglican Communion, churches are already engaged in tree growing and ecosystem restoration. In Kenya, the Anglican Church has partnered with the Kenya Forest Services in an ambitious reforestation project.
